My name is Erin, and my journaling and paper craft practices have held me over the course of my life, helping me to make meaning, nourish my spirit, body and mind, come more fully in to myself, find my creative voice, and continues to bring me solace and joy. I am an absolute nerd for stationery, and always have been. I teach workshops and design and sell journaling related products, and that work is such a gift. I also love planners!

I left my full time job working in public health in a local government setting (after many years working on violence prevention there) at the beginning of 2021 to focus on being a small business owner. It was a bold, exciting, and scary move. My journaling practice supported me.

I am a social worker and therapist (not currently a practicing therapist, but I bring 10+ years experience), with expertise related to childhood trauma, attachment, and all forms of violence. I continue to work in the fields of equity centered trauma informed care and violence prevention over at Collective Action Consulting, in addition to my work here at Journal As Altar. Through many years of navigating trauma, my journaling and paper craft practice have been an anchor. A few years back, I realized that my journals acted as altars in my life and that felt powerful.

I am white, and actively choose to betray whiteness. I will be in a life-long relationship with what that looks like. Lately, that looks like untangling myself from binary and supremacy thinking and elevating what’s possible when we center collective well-being and our potential outside of oppressive norms.

I love laughing (and do easily and often), chocolate cake, being in or near water, art supplies and stationery (natch), loud earrings, flowers, learning, friendly pranks, podcasts, my babely partner, a bold lip, true crime, drag race, teaching, sharp wit, good political commentary, critical analysis, our cats, lists 😉, and social justice.

With intention and practice, your journal can be an altar to
healing, well-being, and building the world you want to see.

Develop your practice

I believe we all play a role in growing the just, equitable, loving world that will bring all of us to collective liberation. A world where everyone gets to thrive. My journals are both portal and vessel, altars to what is possible. My journals document my commitment to the collective, my commitment to myself and my loves, and act as accountability reminders. My journals hold pain, joy, healing, reflection. Yours can, too.

Journal As Altar is a freedom project, not an assignment that you pass or fail.
