Notes on this month’s images:
✄ As I continue to curate vintage, found, and premium contemporary ephemera for the Everything Good Ephemera Bundles (I am so obsessed with these), I am reminded how much I love old paper. It’s so romantic and nostalgic! This printable includes many vintage labels from the 1960’s, meant to be cheeky. You be the judge. These came on gummed sheets to be cut up (sound familiar?) and used like stickers, before stickers were widely available for home use. I love how decidedly analogue they are, and the color range. I hope you love them. The actual IRL versions are in some of the bundles, but since they are grab bag style I can’t guarantee specific contents.
⚘ The bearded irises (also obsessed) are in full bloom right now in our garden. They are, to me, pure magic. They come in thousands of striking color combinations, and some even glitter in the sun. By next month they will have cycled out completely. They are a brilliant mob of color in our yard. Yesterday a passenger in a moving car rolled down the window and yelled “I love your flowers!” while I was watering. I will be writing about that in my journal as a favorite moment. Every iris on this page is one that I grew and photographed.
All eyes on the South:
"As the South goes, so goes the nation." - W.E.B. Du Bois
I will never stop appreciating flowers and stickers and sweet neighbor moments. I will also never bury my head in the sand about the horror show that is this country right now. The gutting of the Voting Rights Act and the resulting gerrymandered maps to repress Black voters and Black Democratic House Reps is literally and truly the civil rights crisis of our time. I didn’t consider that while I admire silly 1960s labels, we’d have to fight 1960s era racism. And, I’m actually not surprised. This was always their plan. This racism has never been limited to the 1960s, and never “went away.” And just like back then, we will mobilize and fight for an equitable world. Right? Right. Let this be the turning point. I encourage you to explore all of this, and how it shows up specifically for you, on your journal pages. Looking for ways to take action? The Southern Coalition for Social Justice is a great place to start.
A better world is possible. Dream about it on your pages, and capture all the magic moments on the way.
