When Journaling Doesn't Feel Good or Easy, Part 2 of 4: The What If's
A four part series on understanding & releasing blocks to a liberatory, nourishing, creative practice, with corresponding podcast episodes
Hello again, paper and pen friends! Welcome to part 2 of 4 in this series, where we are understanding how blocks show up in our creative practices and thinking about moving them out of the way. We are not exploring this so we can meet punitive, self-imposed productivity goals. Rather, we are thinking critically about these blocks so that we may embrace a creative paper craft and journaling practice that primarily offers nervous system balance, nourishment, and support. If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to visit Part 1 (blog post AND podcast episode) in this series, focused on Perfectionism & Performance. It provides context and grounding for the series.
I’ve organized The Blocks around four themes, based on what our peers have shared with me in the Journal As Altar space (informed by my own experience with creativity, and what I learned from my years as a therapist).
The Blocks:
Perfectionism & Performance
The What If’s
Time & Energy
Experiences with Abuse and Betrayal
All 4 of The Blocks are tangled together like a pile of old chain necklaces. Identifying where one begins and the other ends can feel futile. And, we can choose when and where to start to untangle. We can step away from the mess until we have the patience and fortitude to bring the gentleness and attention to detail that is required.
Let’s look at The What If’s.
