Journaling Getaway in the Woods: Join Me

a soothing little treat for the lead up to E Day in the US

I’t’s no secret around here that I love a little solo getaway with my journals, supplies, podcasts, delicious foods, books, music, Bob’s Burgers. Given that autumn is my favorite season and Postcard Cabins was having a sale, a September trip was in order. I thought I would bring you along, friends. This isn’t the first (and won’t be the last) video I share from one of these tiny cabins. I am not sponsored by Postcard Cabins in any way, fyi. I just truly love them. This was my first time going before the snow sets in. It was lovely, lovely, lovely. A perfect autumnal experience. If you would like a discount code, please comment below, and I will share mine with you.

The VDTs are once again all around us, and even just editing this video offered soothing to my amped nervous system. Earlier today my spouse was returning home from the donkey sanctuary where they volunteer - yes, that’s real and as cute as you think - just about 30 minutes outside of Portland, and one of those 45 highway caravans with giant flags waving on giant trucks was intentionally slowing traffic way down on the highway. As I waited for them to get back, I did have a few awful thoughts. They are genderqueer, and that’s evident. What if something happens?? My mind raced. My heart accelerated. “They are totally safe inside a moving vehicle. They will be okay.” There are several reasons why I wouldn’t put any presidential candidate’s bumper sticker on our car. One of those reasons is: to not be easily identified by dangerous people. The Mary Oliver bumper sticker is probably an indicator, but they would have to be DEEPLY informed about queer culture. Ames made it home safe and sound, just grossed out and a little rattled by the display.

All this to say: there is so much at stake and this is such an anxiety producing time. And so I offer this video with no voice over, just the sounds of nature, coffee brewing, background music, and me talking and reading in real time. I hope it feels like a buoy, or like floating on a soft cloud.

One of the pages I made after pulling those cards

Your communities need you, and you need your communities. And that, my loves, is a gift that no one can take from us and that only we can fulfill for each other.

How will we show up for Palestinians, Ukrainians, Sudanese, Congolese - no matter who wins? How will we show up for each other?

I am currently listening to these two songs on repeat:

PS - I also watched the entirety of that Mormon wives show on this trip, which I downloaded before leaving like a true visionary. Soda culture and heteropatriarchy, wow!
